Production Diary 17/12/11

I recently conducted a photo shoot, in which I took an old camera that has be broken beyond repair and smashed it up, taking images at various different stages of breaking the camera. I also reassembled the camera once it was broken as I felt this looked interesting and visually appealing. I used the Canon 550D to take the images in my photo shoot, as it is particularly good for close ups, allowing me to shoot in great detail and shoot in shallow focus. I also have used this camera previously, thus I am familiar with it and how to work it.
I have now completed drafts for two of my tasks, the digipak and the magazine advert that can be found below. I will now collect audience feedback for these drafts in order to decide how I can improve them.
I am currently unable to work on my music video as there is something wrong with my footage, meaning the program closes whenever I try to open it. Therefore, for now and over the Christmas holidays I plan to improve my posts on my blog as I feel some of them may have been to brief, and lacked some explanation.

Magazine Advert First Draft

I have not taken up a whole page for my magazine advert, as the band is not extremely famous or well known yet, thus would not be able to afford such an advert.

This is what my magaizne advert would look like actually in the magazine, with existing adverts for albums on the same page.

Photoshoot

Here are some examples of the kinds of images I took in my recent photoshoot for my digipak and magzine advert. I tried to be as creative as possible when smashing up the camera, taking images at various stages and placing them in interesting positions. I played around with the film I found inside th camera, and also reassembled the camera after smashing it, which I felt looked very visually interesting.

Audience Feedback - Digipak Ideas

I was unsure of whether to use the camera idea for my digipak, thus I decided to get some audience feedback and see what other thought of the idea. I explained briefly the ideas to them, and also showed them the picture in the previous post so they could further understand what kind of images I was planning to use.

Matt - I think the idea of smashing up a camera could look very effecting and interesting, especially if you got an older one not a digital one. You could try and use lots of close ups. for example of the smashed glass to get a different effects. I think this whole idea would be eye catching, and if I saw an advert of this in a magazine I would be attarcted to it as it is quite original. Therefore you could maybe use these camera images for the magazine advert too, so you have more consistency between your products and I think it would do well in attracting an audience.

DigiPak/Magazine Advert Ideas

Another idea for these products is to buy an old broken camera that is beyond repair and take various shots of it, perhaps breaking it up more as I go. This will continue with the theme of seeing and looking, it could also look quite dramatic and be very conceptual if I did it well. I may begin with an image of simply a broken lens then carry on until I am pulling the different parts out of the camera. I could also then put text onto the tape/wires, for example the track listings.

Production Diary 10/12/11

I have been continuing to research into existing products in terms of digipaks and magazine adverts, especially of the indie/rock genre. I have also been researching on the internet to find different sources of inspiration, as I have some ideas but need to further develop them.
I have also been continuing to put my video together on Adobe Premiere Pro, which is more time comsuming than I expected, but I decided to rename and organize all my clips in order to make it eaisier and speed up the process.

Possible Magazine Advert Idea

This is the cover art used in Surfer Blood's album Astro Coast. It appears to be two images merged together but with the cubes it appears to be like pixels. I may use this idea in my magazine advert as it is fairly simple but still effective and somewhat thought provoking in the audience as they will try to figure out what the image is, and depending on my chosen images it can be somewhat conceptual.

They seem to keep this use of two images as a theme through their products, as their second CD release uses similar methods. I am considering using this in both my digipack cover and my magazine article, as it is original and eyecatching thus will immediately indicate to my audience that these products are both from the same artist.

Production Diary 02/12/11

This week I have continued to put together my music video on Adobe Premiere, which has proved a time consuming task as I want all the cuts to be in perfect time. I have also been collecting together all the documents needed for my coursework, such as Actor Release Forms, which means I have the permission of the actor to use any footage I gain and they fully understand my aims to use it in my work, which is important as sometimes they may argue that they don't like it and don't want me to use it when I have already created the video, which would prove a serious problem. I previously also created a form of all the personnel details of those will will be involved in my video, so they know their jobs and what they need to do. I posted this onto the Facebook group I created for my music video to make sure they all ad easy access to a copy.
I have also been considering creating an introduction for my music video, as the chosen song is very short, only around one and a half minutes. I recently saw Summer Camp's video for the song 'Down' which consists solely of GIFs, which I think has created an interesting effect for the audience as it differs from normal music videos. Furthermore I think this could be successful as it may appeal to my target audience of teenagers and young adults due to the fact GIF's are very popular on the internet, particularly social networking sites such as Facebook and Tumblr, people will often create them for humour.

Intro Ideas

I have decided to add an intro to my music video as the song is very short and this will make my work of a higher standard and allow me to use different skills. I am considering continuing with the theme of looking, seeing and photographs as seen in my digipaks and parts of my video. One of my ideas is to do something similar to what is used in the video 'Down' by Summer Camp. I have never seen such an effect in a music video before and I think it is very effective and original, however it may be hard to do myself.
